Spring River
Emerging near the Missouri border in north central Arkansas, the Spring
River has been described as the state's most dependable natural
stream, and best float trip, Mammoth Spring, flowing at over nine
million gallons of 58-degree water per hour, serves as the headwaters
for the river and provides plenty of fresh water throughout the year.
Trout and walleye fishing are rated tops, and floating between Mammoth
Spring and Hardy is excellent for beginning and intermediate canoeists.
Many areas of the upper Spring River are popular with fly fishermen.
The river is crystal-clear, with long pools and whitewater falls. The
scenery is mostly hardwood forest with some rocky bluffs. Access is
from U.S. 63, which parallels much of the upper Spring.
The South fork of the river is a mild, beautiful warm water stream with
excellent scenery ideal for a leisurely float trip.
Hardy
Hardy, which was a railroad construction
camp in 1884, has retained its old-charm
appearance along Main Street. In fact,
Hardy's central downtown area is on the
National Register of Historic Places and
hasn't changed much since Model-T days.
New growth and attractions have located
at the edges of town, leaving a tiny mecca
for craft and antique shopping in the heart
of town. The little town boasts three
museums, summer musical shows, bed and breakfast inns and several festivals each year.Cherokee Village, the
state's first resort/retirement settlement, is just southwest of town, offering lake activities and two
championship golf courses.
